The crisp air of fall brings to mind a number of seasonally-appropriate activities. Apple picking, pumpkin carving, and hayrides are just a few. For lovers of golf, however, autumn brings to mind perhaps just one: fall golfing. Indeed, when the temperature drops from the summer’s unrelenting heat, the thoughts of many turns to getting out on the green as a way to enjoy the sport, as well as the beauty of the season. Listed below are some of the best courses to try this fall.

The Catskill Golf Club, Catskill, New York
Any leaf peeper worth his foliage will attest to the beauty of New York’s Catskills region in autumn. Among the riot of magnificent reds, oranges and yellows that adorn the winding roads of the area, sits the Catskill Golf Club, a semi-private club operating since 1927. This club offers a nine-hole course in a glorious setting. It is truly a “must-see” destination in fall.

Club de golf Cowansville, Quebec, Canada
In addition to the seasonal beauty afforded by the foliage, the setting for this 72-hole course is enhanced by coniferous woods and a backdrop of the Laurentian Mountains. The club’s serene setting is further heightened by its close proximity to Montreal. The vibrant city is just 45 minutes away.

St. Croix Country Club, Calais, Maine
Offering coastline views, including lighthouses, this public 9-hole course is quintessentially Maine. It offers an expansive men’s par-70 course of more than 5,500 feet.

Treetops Resort, Gaylord, Michigan
Autumn in Northern Michigan is one of the nation’s best-kept secrets. In addition, the Treetops Resort, home to five distinct and championship-worthy courses, is considered Michigan’s most spectacular. Among its 81 holes, it is widely considered to contain “The World’s Best Par 3 Course.”

Sedona Golf Resort: Sedona, Arizona
While the east coast seems to get most of the fall foliage attention, golfers in other regions of the United States need not despair. Splendid fall foliage can be found elsewhere, including at 4,000 feet above sea level in Arizona. The Sedona Golf Resort offers crisp air and stunning views of orange and red leaves juxtaposed against red and white rock formations, just a few hours outside of the relentless heat of Phoenix or Tucson.
