Houston is one of the biggest cities in the U.S., and with great power comes great responsibility. Texas does not take this responsibility lightly. The people of Houston come together every year to donate thousands of dollars to various charities and causes in order to better their community for those in need. If you’re looking to donate your time or money to organizations in the Houston area, the list below is a great place to start. Join the city of Houston and stand up for those in need!

Houston Children’s Charity

This amazing charity focuses on children in need throughout the Houston area. Starting from a need to fundraise for her children’s school, Laura Ward began organizing spaghetti dinners in the high school gym for the community to attend. This small initiative has led to over $40 million in donations over the past 30 years. The proceeds of the Houston Children’s Charity go to various causes, ranging from collegiate scholarships to supplying beds to underprivileged youth as part of their “A Better Night’s Sleep” program. The goal of the HCC is to leave no legitimate request for assistance unanswered.

Ronald McDonald House Houston

This national charity helps many cities across the country, and Houston is no exception. By offering assistance to children and families in need, the Ronald McDonald House has partnered with Texas Children’s Hospital in order to provide the care necessary to children throughout the city. With meal donation services and volunteer opportunities, the Ronald McDonald House keeps underprivileged children in Houston feeling loved and cared for.

Houston SPCA

Many major cities throughout the U.S. have SPCA initiatives to help animals who are in need of care and a loving home. Many animals in the SPCA are either strays who have never had a home or have been rescued from unspeakable conditions in which their owner neglected them. Donations are always accepted in any amount, but with contributions of $25, $50, or $100, your monetary donation will go directly to servicing life-saving medical care, ambulance expenses, and food for the animals in need. Houston Food Bank

This charitable organization focuses on a sometimes invisible problem that can affect even those that you would never expect. Hunger impacts millions across the country, and in 2015, Feeding America was so moved by Houston Food Bank’s efforts to end hunger that they were awarded Food Bank of the Year. Currently, a major goal of the Houston Food Bank is to reach 100 million meals provided to those facing hunger by the year 2018. They’re well on their way to their goal, with dozens of events and volunteer outreach programs available to make this dream a reality.

Houston Area Women’s Center
This outstanding charity works to end domestic and sexual violence against women throughout the Houston Area. The Women’s Center offers 24 hour hotlines for those seeking help or who find themselves in an emergency situation. 2017 marks the organization’s 40th anniversary of providing a free and safe place for women to access the counseling and services necessary to rebuild their lives and become successful.

With so many local charities supporting worthy causes, Houston community members are paving the way to make the city of Houston, the state of Texas, and the country a better and safer place to live. Several of these great initiatives benefit from the Patrick Reed Foundation, and even more initiatives can benefit from the kindness of others within the Houston community.
